This is Nib's brief for Workington, the fortnight of October ninth to twenty-second. A burglary charge and a look back at a town landmark fill this brief. In the courts, a Workington man has been charged after reports of an incident at Salterbeck Trading Estate, and that case leads the news.
Marc McIvor faces charges of burglary, shoplifting and possession of a Class C drug, the Times and Star reports. He appeared before Workington Magistrates' Court and has since been released by the courts.
On a softer note, the town has been remembering The Ritz Cinema, a once-luxurious entertainment venue here in Workington. It opened on September twenty-sixth, 1938, and was designed by Tom Nicholson with Art Deco elements. It was a landmark of its time.
For decades the Ritz served local audiences before closing in 1988. The name returned to the town with a new cinema in 2021. A landmark fondly recalled, and a name that still lives on.
